Simon & Mary ALC Menswear safari bucket hat. ALC Menswear Shweshwe shirt.
The local designers curated for this shoot were selected because of their fabrications and ethics which fell seamlessly into the landscape.
Founder Amanda Laird Cherry of the Durban based brand ALC Menswear, in collaboration with head designer Brendon Sturrock, created an innovative collection knocking it out of the park! With fabrics such as genuine Shweshwe juxtaposed with camo and hand-dyed marble prints, their language offers a deep experience of the South African lifestyle with classic Asian influences. Floyd Avenue, a Soweto-based designer who’s canvas is inspired by music, culture, activism and sincerity of character as seen in his camo pieces.
Chulaap, a Thai-South African designer who takes inspiration to another exciting level, from layered traditional styles, African wax fabric and Shweshwe prints to inspiring knits. Nicholas Coutts, with his developing weaves, knits and tapestries is also, as all the designers in this shoot, supporting the local rag trade, and hopefully growing the industry back to its former workforce. Mmuso Maxwell, an African design duo originally from the town of Bloemfontein, better known for its industrial farming than its creative community, is growing after being selected for Vogue Talents.
Rich Mnisi, another Soweto designer, is taking the local and international scene by storm with his cutting edge creative direction and strong design aesthetic. Simon and Mary milliners seasonally collaborate with ALC Menswear and other creatives such as Trevor Sturman. With a background of seventy years in headwear, this Joburg based milliner keeps on giving!
