Alexa Singer captures the exquisite morning light on Damilola, wearing contemporary cutting edge South Africa designers, in the town of Prince Albert.
Prince Albert, a town well kept and manicured to cater for retired creatives, locals and travel enthusiasts alike. Its lifestyle and entertainment ranging from the Karoo olive farms and a working moonshine distillery, to boutique hotel-style cottages and a cooking school restaurant, not to mention the majestic Swartberg Pass which runs through the Swartberg nature reserve, dotted with caves featuring san rock art.
WIth these great surroundings, we sat with the enthusiastic Damilola and asked him about his thoughts on the town, what his background is and where to next.
“Started my journey going for castings. I spent a lot on transportation and almost gave up. I got many turn downs but I was determined and focused”
- Where are you from and what is your cultural background?
I am Yoruba born and raised in the city of Lagos State, Nigeria.
- What do you love about Nigeria?
The amazing African culture and its creativity, the Lagos nightlife, the food: amala and ewedu, iyan and egusi, and nice side dishes like boli and epa [roasted plantain and groundnut]...
- How did you get into modeling?
A client at my mom store saw me and asked if I played basketball or am into modeling. I told him no. He advised me to make use of my height, and that I also shouldn´t forget schooling. So I worked towards it.
Started my journey into modeling going for castings. I got many turn downs but I was determined and focused. I spent a lot on transportation and almost gave up. A big modeling competition, Elite Model Look Nigeria, came along. I entered and to God be the glory, I won and represented Nigeria in the world finals in Milan.
- What do you do aside for modeling?
Apart from modeling, I'm also a hairstylist who specializes in female hair!
- Which country or city would you most like to visit?
New York, China, Korea, London, Paris and Milan to build up my career in modeling.
- You are working with the model agency 20 Model Management in Cape Town. What do you think of South Africa’s Mother city?
Capetown is a beautiful place. I would love to come to visit over and over again asides modeling.
- What did you think about the town of Prince Albert in the Karoo?
It’s a beautiful and calm place! I would probably love to stay there when I am much older and retired from work and hustle of life, but definitely not now because it’s too calm and quiet for me to explore. Going there with friends for vacation would not be a bad idea though.
- Where do you see yourself in the future?
I see myself achieving my dreams of being a world-class model, fashion guru, owning my designer and modeling company and also an amazing salon. And because of my love for cooking, I would love to own a big restaurant, and also have my own charity home for orphans.
