The new Mercedes CLA feels more mature and flawless than its predecessor. The shapes have been refined and the technology is fine-tuned.
The race between car companies to present the sportiest and most performance-filled cars never seems to cease. Mercedes Benz is certainly no exception, which in many cases has been a leader in this area. The CLA model was presented in 2013 and was a sedan version of the A-class, a model with a story that deserves its own article. The Shooting Break version of the CLA was introduced in 2015 and this year it's time for the upgrade to generation two.
The new generation has got a more mature look. All the details have been refined and now feel more perfect. One especially large change is the rear, with new slimmer lights and better design than the previous generation. The front also has the new design and the grill, now tilted slightly forward, gives the car a more aggressive look.
“This is a car that makes you smile”
The color combination of black and orange makes the test car extra eye-catching and is appropriately named "Edition Orange Art". The front and back bumpers as well as the rims are outlined in orange. All the interior seams are orange, and so are some of the details on the dashboard. Extremely tasteful and gives the car a sporty and cool look!
The above-mentioned color combination is not the only thing that contributes to the sporty attitude. The big wheels, the side steps and most of all the alcantara seats all say a lot about what this car has to offer. When you get in the CLA 250 and close the door it is like closing the zipper of a tailor-made biker leather jacket. The car door windows of the CLA 250 are rather small, but do not impair your vision from the driver’s seat. Everything is close together without feeling cramped. The back seat of the CLA 250 is surprisingly spacious despite its format.
The CLA 250 engine can produce 211 horsepower. As mentioned above, there are already two AMG versions of the CLA, 35 and 45, where the CLA 45 has an incredible 421 horses. They all have four-wheel drive. But let us get back to the car we are talking about. The number of horsepowers can be blinding, but do you really need that much power in such a small car? The answer is naturally subjective.
What we can say after a day with the CLA 250, however, is that this is a car that makes you smile. It is incredibly fun to drive and literally feels like a small go-kart. It is very easily handled thanks to its format and the four-wheel drive. If you engage sport mode, a damper opens, making the growl of the engine extra loud. Sitting behind the wheel driving down the winding roads of southern Germany is an amazing feeling. Bearing today’s experience in mind, it can only be said that the CLA 250 is a fantastic car that is suitable for your everyday commute as well as your weekend cruising. We promise to return with a test drive on both the A 35 and the CLA 45 soon, but until then, the CLA 250 is more than enough.
