The design and lighting of Grand Basel is in a class of its own compared to other car shows. The special displays, that will be moving with the car show around the world, frame the cars in a very tasteful way. In the middle of the picture is an Aston Martin V8 Vantage Volante, the model James Bond drove in the movie “The Living Daylights”, but not as a convertible. Only 192 copies were built as convertible making it extra valuable.

Grand Basel

This year, a brand new car show, Grand Basel, opened up its gates for the first time. James Holm was present at the gala celebration for this somewhat different car show that contains a tasteful mix of the icons of the car world.

With a length of 6.24 meters, a weight of at least 2.5 tons and a V8 engine of 6.3 liters, the Mercedes-Benz 600 Pullmann Landaulet is a mighty piece of work. The name Pullman comes from George Mortimer Pullman who was mainly involved in constructing luxury wagons for the train industry. In the Landaulet version, we find a combination of two worlds of luxury, limousine and convertible at the same time, but with a roof for the driver.

It’s hard to get more exclusive than this. The red Ferrari in the foreground, which is a 312 P, almost deserves its own article because of its history. This prototype was built in Maranello before the 1969 World Championship. The black car in nude carbon fiber is a Pagani Huayra, a masterpiece from Argentine Horachio Pagani who originally worked for both Lamborghini and Ferrari as a carbon fiber expert. Furthest away in the picture is a Bugatti Chiron, also built mostly in carbon fiber and a W16 engine. The speedometer on a Chiron tops out at 500 kilometers per hour.

Between 1964 and 1968, Ferrari built the 275 GTB model, a model which among many is considered the most beautiful Ferrari ever built. When it was launched, it had new revolutionary technology, such as individual rear suspension and gearbox mounted on the rear axle and of course a V12 engine in front. These cars today sell for astronomical sums at auctions, even fixer-uppers like this.

This year, a brand new car show by the name Grand Basel opened up its doors in the Swiss city on the border to France and Germany. The premises where the fair is held were initially built for and are normally used by the large art fair, Art Basel and the jewel and clock fair Basel World.

“Cars should be seen as works of art and as stars taken down from the sky”

James Holm was present at the gala dedication to this somewhat different car show. A car show that contains cars that are either concepts or unique in some way. The motto is that, and a stated intention from the organizers of the fair, cars should be seen as works of art and as stars that have been taken down from the sky.

The future plans for the fair are that it will travel around the world. The next stop after Basel will be Miami Beach and then Hong Kong.

This masterpiece and perhaps the world's most famous iconic car is undoubtedly designer Marcello Gandini's Lamborghini Countach. The model was first shown at Geneva's car show in 1971. The name arose when one of the craftsmen at the factory spontaneously exclaimed contacc” when he first saw the car. "Contacc" is Piedemonte dialect and can be loosely translated into "wow". In 1974, the finished car rolled out from the factory and could reach a speed of 300 kilometers per hour even back then thanks to its shape and the powerful V12 engine.

The designer behind the DB4 GT Zagato is Ercole Spada. This was his first creation and probably the most famous. Among Aston Martin collectors there are few models that draw as much attention as this one. The initial reveal took place in connection with the London Motor Show in 1960 in Earl's Court.

An icon and mainly so in the world of rally is undoubtedly the angular model Delta HF Integrale from Italian Lancia. Here in a new take from Eugenio Amos behind Amos Automotive. With his own considerable car collection and a hashtag that read #MakeLanciaGreatAgain, Mr. Amos is rebuilding old Lancia Delta Integrales in the same way that Singer does with old Porsche 911s.

During their eighteen years of production, only an exclusive number of 180 cars have been rolled out from Pagani Automobili S.p.A. outside Modena. The latest model is Huayra which launched in 2012. The V12 engine in the Pagani cars has since the beginning all been built by Mercedes AMG. In Huayra, there is a double turbocharged V12 between 730 and 800 horsepower. The name Huayra" means "the god of the wind" in a language spoken in the mountains of Bolivia.
